Margie’s Candies (Chicago)

The polar vortex let up for about six hours. So I did what any Chicagoan would do when the sun peeks through the icy clouds for a few moments. I went and got ice cream.

There are those places in every city that are known by locals – legendary in their quality and chock-full of city-specific nostalgia. If you’re looking for ice cream in Chicago, Margie’s is it.

Sure the tables are wobbly. My booth may or may not have been broken, causing me to sit on the edge for fear of the whole thing caving in.

But it doesn’t matter and here’s why…

It actually tastes better than it looks. No joke.

Charm. It’s something you just aren’t going to get at Dairy Queen.

Yes, there’s a coin-operated jukebox on the table.

Everything is homemade, hand-whipped, hand-dipped, massaged, caressed, kissed, and served up in dishes that would make your grandma smile.

The banana split comes with hot dipping chocolate and homemade vanilla wafers. C’mon!

I just don't want to look back and think "I could've eaten that."
